Stupid Love

“Only a stupid God would send me to hell.” -Pres. Rody

This remark of the president made me reflect on God’s stupidity, Yes he made me realize that God is really stupid, stupid for loving us unconditionally even if we do not deserve any of it because of our sinfulness, even more for giving us unlimited chances for change… He waits. He loves. He wants us back…

Love makes one stupid. Love makes one unwise in one’s decision. Love makes one irrational, disregarding all the right reasons for what one ultimately feels. Love makes one a fool. It makes one crazy over things, over people, over anything even if the object of one’s love does not know what one feels, even if the object of one’s love does not know anything about the one loving, even if the object of one’s love does not really care, and even if the object of one’s love is in love already with another.

It hurts to love like that, it hurts to love alone, to love someone you can’t be with. It hurts to protect the one you love without him/her knowing that you are there for him/her, without him/her knowing that you love him/her. It hurts not to be able to say what you really feel. And it really hurts if the one you love does not recognize or does not appreciate the love you are showing through your actions and through your simple expressions, thus, making one stupid because of love. It is hard to be stupid because of love because you would not know when to stop. You will just realize one day that I must not have done it, I should have stop in the first place. But that is love, it makes us do extraordinary things with extraordinary patience and with extraordinary effort because of our love for the other, even if it also makes us experience extraordinary pain.

God, I would say is stupid, stupid because of his love.(I do not mean to offend or to blaspheme God.) If I were God, I would just use my power to save, to change people and for them to love me. But if God is like that, He shouldn’t be called God but a controller, a manipulator, but our God is stupid, a fool because of Love for He is Love. He is stupid because He is willing to wait, He is willing to do all sorts of things we do not expect Him to do. He is willing to be everywhere even if we do not recognize Him. He is willing to forgive over and over again. He is willing to be like us. He is willing to experience pain and He is willing to die just to save all of us from sin and from evil. That is what He did when He sent His only Son to be like us, to experience what all of us are experiencing and even more, He is willing to be humiliated, he accepted all of that because He loves each one of us. And again because of love, after his time here, he established the Church entrusting it to people like us, so that we will be guided and feel the concrete expression of God’s saving love. He sends people to us, to help us, to lead us back to him.

Let us altogether strive to love, to love like God, “Love that is patient and kind; love that is not jealous or boastful; that is not arrogant or rude. Love that does not insist on its own way; that is not irritable or resentful; that does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things... Love that never ends.” (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8)

In this season of love, I invite you all to reflect on the love of God and strive to have that kind of love. It may be stupid, but it saves.
